ISU/LOF Centenary Greece - 2008 Jun 26
On Wednesday 25th June, 2008, the Yacht Club of Greece, one of the most exclusive, prestigious and breathtaking venues of Athens, was the setting for the celebration of the Centenary of the Lloyd's Open Form salvage contract. The International Salvage Union honoured Greece by choosing Athens as one of the few maritime centres in the world to host such an event, and even more specifically that it was held within the Piraeus area. The event was sponsored by TSAVLIRIS SALVAGE GROUP, Svitzer Salvage B.V., Multraship Salvage B.V. and Gigilinis Salvage and Towage.
Mr. Arnold Witte, President of the ISU, delivered a persuasive speech on the importance of the Lloyd's Open Form, emphasising the consistent revision needed to keep it up-to-date on ever changing salvage issues, one of the most prominent being environmental. Mr. Andreas A. Tsavliris, of TSAVLIRIS SALVAGE GROUP and member of the Executive Committee of the ISU, followed and spoke about the event itself as well as introducing Mr. Ioannis Joannos, Secretary General at the Ministry of Mercantile Marine. Mr. Joannos praised the Lloyd's Open Form as well as salvors all over the world for saving lives, property, preventing pollution and protecting the environment.
The evening was a huge success with ISU guests attending from all over the world; among those present were many members of the maritime community, including ship owners, insurance brokers, average adjusters, and maritime lawyers. They also enjoyed delicious food, classical music played by a string quartet and also a wonderful surprise in the form of six professional dancers performing traditional Greek dancing in authentic costumes to the audiences delight well into the night.
