TSAVLIRIS Backs New ISPS Guide - 2004 Mar 15

A newly produced pocket guide to the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS) has been produced with the support from the TSAVLIRIS SALVAGE GROUP and is being distributed to international shipping companies with offices in Cyprus and abroad.

Entitled 'A 10-Minute Guide on IMO's ISPS Code', the publication has been produced by the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association (CYMEPA), chaired by George A. Tsavliris. The TSAVLIRIS Group has sponsored the development of the guide and the initial printing costs.

The '10-Minute Guide' follows the success several years ago of a similar CYMEPA- published guide on International Safety Management (ISM) and, like the earlier booklet, provides a digest of the main points of the new requirements in simple language and an easy-to-read format. It is primarily aimed at seafarers, but is also intended to be of benefit to office staff as well.

Launched at the Ministry of Communications and Works in Nicosia, the guide has already attracted demand from shipping companies, with 5,000 copies being ordered from offices in Cyprus. Additional 4.000 copies - translated in the Russian language- have been ordered from a Russian shipping company based in Limassol .

"This will aid seafarers as well as shore-side staff to understand the provisions of the code and correctly apply them," said Mr Tsavliris, stressing the minimal time the industry has to comply with ISPS Code before the July 1 deadline this year. He thanked staff at Cyprus' Department of Merchant Shipping, the Cyprus Shipping Council and CYMEPA members for assisting with the drafting of the guide.

Attending the launch, Minister of Communications and Works, Kikis Kazamias, called the initiative "particularly useful". He thanked CYMEPA for "its ceaseless efforts to protect the marine environment."

The TSAVLIRIS group has been a strong supporter of CYMEPA, founded in 1992, and its forerunner in Greece, the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association (HELMEPA), founded 1982, throughout the history of both voluntary anti-pollution associations.
