Tsavliris People and Places - 2015 Feb 02

-Tsavliris Salvage Group sponsored the Handbook of the Forum organized by the "Maria Tsakos" Foundation – International Center of Maritime Research and Tradition in association with Capital Link: "Shipping in the 21st Century: Preparing the Industry for the Future".   The Forum took place on 8 October 2014 at the Eugenides Foundation and was well attended. The "Maria Tsakos" Foundation was founded by Captain Panagiotis N. Tsakos and his family in 2008 and acts as an International Centre of Maritime Research and Tradition.  It aims at redefining the relation of young Greeks with the sea.

-Tsavliris Salvage Group supported  WISTA HELLAS as a main sponsor at their Annual Forum, titled "Shipping today... the key players' perspective", held on 2 December 2014 at the Metropolitan Hotel in Athens. Over 300 shipping professionals from the Greek Maritime Community as well as abroad, were in attendance. One of the key speakers, Mr Alexandros Tourkolias, CEO of the National Bank of Greece, gave a real picture of today's financial environment and the direct effects on shipping worldwide.  The Forum attended Capt. George Polychroniou (Operations Manager), Claire Tsavliris (Principal) and Lia Panagopoulou (Head of Marketing).

-Tsavliris Salvage Group was the main sponsor of the 3rd Hellenic Marine Risk Forum at the Eugenides Foundation, Athens, on 4 December 2014. The Forum, organized by TradeWinds Events, brought together more than 250 buyers and providers of marine insurance for a day and focused on improving the process of renewals. Topical presentations on "Prospects for the 2015 P&I Renewals" and "The state of the hull market" put the overall market into context prompting a high level of audience interaction. The Forum attended Mr George A. Tsavliris (Principal), Claire Tsavliris (Principal) and Capt. George Polychroniou (Operations Manager).

-Tsavliris Salvage Group supported the scholarship programme of Piraeus University's, Department of Banking and Financial Management.   On 9 December 2014 the representatives of the sponsors awarded scholarship prizes to 44 top students during a ceremony taking place in the Main Hall of the University. Scholarships are given on an annual basis to the top performers enabling them  to continue their studies.

-Mr George A. Tsavliris, Principal of Tsavliris Salvage Group, attended the Salvage and Wreck Conference in London, on 10 December 2014. As a panelist at the panel discussion: "Is the future of LOF hanging in the balance?", he commented on the future of Lloyd's Open Form (LOF) contracts, underlining that "if you handle LOFs with a fair approach and sensibly, they are the most user friendly contracts in every respect". Mr Tsavliris described the advantages of LOFs namely simplicity, speed, flexibility and corporate responsibility. The consensus was that the LOF is the most user friendly contract.

-Mr Nicolas A. Tsavliris, FICS, Chairman of the ICS Greek Branch and Principal of Tsavliris Salvage Group attended the 10th Annual Forum of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (Greek Branch) on 10 December 2014, at the Eugenides Foundation. ICS celebrated its 10 years in Greece, and Mr Tsavliris expressed his pride for the Branch's accomplishments, namely the students' distinctions within a framework of transparent international competition. He also congratulated Mrs Natalia Margioli for the good work in her well-managed school (Hellenic Management Centrer/ICS Greek Branch) and urged them to keep striving for excellence. Introducing the topic of the Forum he conferred the view that shipping is a risky business and often relays "that sinking feeling", with the issue of when the market will rise again being uncertain because of the many at play.

-On 28 December 2014, Capt. George Polychroniou, was asked for his opinion to the Media ("E" Channel) on the incident of the passenger ferry "Norman Atlantic" which caught fire on 27 December 2014 in the Strait of Otranto, on a ferry run from Patras to Ancona. A fire broke out on the car deck in the early hours, half an hour after leaving the port of Igoumenitsa, Greece, an intermediate stop, when she was 44 nautical miles (81 km) northwest of the island of Corfu, 33 nautical miles (61 km) northwest of the island of Othonoi. Capt. Polychroniou said that "although Albania was much closer, for political reasons the final decision rested with the Italian rescuers". Capt. Polychroniou added that under the circumstances the evacuation and rescue efforts should come from the air (helicopters etc.) and not from the sea.

-Mr George A. Tsavliris, Chairman of INTERMEPA, President of CYMEPA, and Principal of Tsavliris Salvage Group, attended the 2nd Mare Forum Dubai 2015 "The Dubai Global summit of Marine and Maritime leaders",  on 21 January 2015. As a key speaker, Mr Tsavliris covered most aspects of the new environmental issues stressing the importance of public awareness in order to address the new regulations, which will be effected in the future. Mr Tsavliris gave his full encouragement and support in creating a new MEPA in the United Arab Emirates area, which received a very positive response.

-Mr George A. Tsavliris was invited as a panelist at the 14th P&I Conference which took place at the Piraeus Marine Club on 29 January 2014. The topic Mr Tsavliris' was invited to support was: "This house believes Club Managers are allowed too much discretion when it comes down to deciding on what types of incidents will be covered". The P&I Conference takes place every year and attracts most of the P&I Clubs based in Piraeus, as well as personalities from the shipping, legal and insurance sectors.

-Mr Andreas A. Tsavliris, Principal of Tsavliris Salvage Group, gave his annual lecture at the City University London to over 120 postgraduate students on 2 February 2015. The presentation was on "Shipping Trade & Finance," and some of the topics discussed were the ordering of new buildings, buying and selling second hand vessels, chartering, insurance, banking, financing and currencies – emphasizing the importance and necessity of a global commercial salvage industry. The lecture lasted over 4 hours with Mr Tsavliris drawing on his many years of experience and constantly interacting with the students.
