TSAVLIRIS in Trio of Successful Operations - 2004 Apr 12

The TSAVLIRIS SALVAGE GROUP has redelivered the steel products-laden cargo vessel "ORION I" to her owners after a lightening and refloating operation in Chioggia, Italy, which was the third successfully completed Lloyd's Open Form salvage contract handled by TSAVLIRIS so far this year.

The "ORION I" was on a voyage from Rijeka, Porto Nogaro and Chioggia with 2,200 tonnes of steel products including project cargo on deck, in February when she ran aground near the breakwater of the Italian port. Several days of initial efforts to refloat the vessel, which was later discovered to be resting on stone along about 30 metres of her bottom, were unsuccessful. In addition to subcontracting a salvage tug to assist the casualty, Tsavliris hired a crane and a cargo-receiving barge to be used for the discharge of cargo from the deck and forward part of the hold. After a lightening operation, the vessel was refloated and redelivered to owners after an underwater inspection of damage.

In another case earlier this year, TSAVLIRIS' own salvage fleet was called into action when the 35,000 dwt "MARILIA" reported a breakdown on a voyage from Novorossiysk to Malaysia carrying fertilizer in bulk. In early February, the vessel was immobilized about 700 miles south-east of Socotra and this time the TSAVLIRIS-operated tug "SB-408" sailed from Colombo, Sri Lanka to assist the vessel. The "MARILIA" was towed and delivered successfully in Colombo later the same month.

This year's third case also demonstrated the international salvor's wide geographical capability. Mid-February, TSAVLIRIS successfully refloated the 27,000 dwt bulker "ZOITSA S" which had ran aground in the Parana Guazu River in South America. The vessel was laden with 23,000 tonnes of bulk wheat on a voyage from Uruguay to Algeria when the incident occurred.
